Mt. Everest lies in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Its height is 8848.88 meters above sea level. Every year, lots of climbers attempt to summit this peak, but unfortunately, only some of the countable numbers can get succeeded and stand on top of Mt. Everest.

In order to reach the base camp of Mt. Everest, it is needed to go to Lukla. This is a small place, surrounded by mountain views in the Khumbu region. There is the accessibility of the airport as well. So, you can go there by airplane from Kathmandu. The walking ways are accessible. You can reach Lukla by trekking from Jiri. It is the traditional route, used by our ancestors like Edmond Hillary.

Classical Route

The classical route means a traditional route that has been used for going to the base camp of Everest directly. It starts from Lukla and reaches EBC. It is almost 65 kilometers from Lukla to EBC in total. It goes along the Sagarmatha National Park in the beginning. The trek crosses the major Sherpa highlands.

However, the trekking route begins from the green forested area and moves up into a dry and rainshadow zone at last and reaches Everest Base Camp. The route names or place names are given below;

Through the Gokyo Lake route

This is an alternative route to reach the base camp of Mt. Everest via Gokyo Lakes. It is a bit longer trail because you will go to Gokyo Lake first and then to EBC within a single itinerary. The trail follows the classical trek route in the beginning and then diverts towards another route. During this trek, you need to cross the Cho La Pass as well. It is one of the three highest passes of the Everest region.

While going through this route, you will get the chance to know more about the Sherpa culture as well as the nature of the Khumbu region. This pathway takes you to the remote area of the Everest region. As a result, you can collect the unique and most wonderful experiences throughout your lifetime. The visit to the different lakes of Gokyo and Ngozumpa glacier is awesome.

This is another popular EBC trek route. This trail crosses the three highest passes of Mt. Everest region and visits Everest base camp as well en route before crossing one last Pass. It is the toughest trekking route as you need to go to the highest elevation. The ascending trail is more difficult because the path may be full of snow and scree.

The names of the tallest passes of the Khumbu region with elevation are as follows;

  • Renjo La Pass (5,360 m.)
  • Cho La Pass (5,420 m.)
  • Kongma La Pass (5,535 m.)

Tradition route and come back by Helicopter

This is the most trending EBC trekking route nowadays. Many travelers prefer it because you can get both experiences within a single itinerary. This route follows the classic Everest base camp trek route that starts from Lukla and ends at the base camp. After coming back from EBC to Gorek Shep, you will do the Helicopter tour over the Mt. Everest ranges and collect the spectacular mountain views.
