Upper Dolpo Trekking is a challenging trip in the secluded and the unscathed part in the western Nepal. The trail was opened for the trekkers only in 1989. It is an inspirational trek to explore the isolated ethnic valleys. The picturesque landscape and cultural heritages have made this trekking incredible.

Trekking to Upper Dolpo includes the surprising and wonderful Himalayan views, high passes, alpine meadows and rare finding flora and fauna. The Dolpo has got sources of the herbal plants and other forests.

This restricted land is a dream place for the adventure trekking in Nepal. Walking through the jungle of colourful flowers like rhododendron and others as juniper, hemlock and blue pine make your trail more romantic.

Likewise, it is a wonderful region of the wild animals such as the Snow Leopard, Ghoral, Himalayan Black Bear and many more. The long trip to Upper Dolpo is fascinated by the memorable Tibetan Buddhism and the mesmerizing ethnic traditions. Namgang and the Bon Po Monasteries are beautiful.

Upper Dolpo Trekking in Nepal starts from Jhupal after having a short flight from Nepalgunj. You need to have a flight from Kathmandu in order to reach to Nepalgunj too. The trail sets out through the wilderness of the Shey Phoksundo National Park. This paradise on earth has surrounded by the wonderful Himalayas of Dhaulagiri region. It lies beyond this mountain chain.

The Upper Dolpo Trekking is also known as Shey Gompa Trekking. In the beginning, the trek goes ahead by following the Bheri River. Then it moves on along the treeless area and enters into the Phoksundo River Valley.

The continuation of ascending and descending takes you at Phoksundo Lake. It is the deepest lake of Nepal. It is situated at an elevation of 3611.5 m high above the sea level. The acclimatization day at this Lake is a wonderful charm of the Upper Dolpo Trek along with the crystal waterfalls and meadows which offers the views of surrounding lakes and the village.

It is very hard to cross the Kang La Pass. This pass offers the beautiful sceneries of the large valley and the surrounding mountains. Saldang village is considered as the largest village of this area which is developed in the form of agriculture as well as in economy.

The rest day at Dho Tarap is interesting where you can explore the surrounding cultures as well as have a short walk to observe the Bon Po Monastery. Jeng La Pass is the vantage point for watching the wonderful views of Dhaulagiri Mountain. Moreover, the views of Desert Mountain of Tibet and the Ladak Mountain of India are breathtaking.

En route, you can see the herds of blue sheep. The trail continues thoroughly and ends at Jhupal. From there, you have the back to Nepalgunj and to Kathmandu.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons to trek to Upper Dolpo as the weather is likely to be finest and the temperatures good. We do not recommend having this Upper Dolpo Trekking Nepal in winter season. It is strictly prohibited to go to Upper Dolpo Trekking solo as it lies in the remote area.
